Judge this book by it's cover!

This review applies specifically to the April 2010, Sterling Edition, illustrated by Robert Ingpen:
I'm beginning to feel quite frustrated with the limited publishing information given to books on Amazon. For example, most books where you may click to "look inside" will default to the most common paperback. For books like Tom Sawyer, that is fine if you need the book for high school English class, where any copy cheap enough to write notes in the margins will do. I wanted a copy of Tom Sawyer to keep and love. I saw this publication on Amazon, but it had so little info and the one review given was a single sentence about the general value of Twain's story. The truth is, one doesn't buy this particular printing unless one is already convinced of it's literary excellency! So I am about to do Amazon a huge favor by telling you what it didn't tell me. For about $15, the asking price at the time of this review, you can invest in a real treat for your self or someone you love and wish to inspire.
This printing was meant to mark the one hundredth anniversary of Twain's death (2010). The story is unabridged, provided in full original text. It is positively rich with watercolor illustrations by Robert Ingpen. I just skimmed through the book looking for one that I especially liked, but I couldn't pick just one. In design, they are exactly as I would have dreamed them to be. Barefoot Tom, balancing a piece of straw on his nose, Huck Finn with a dead cat, Tom and puppy in church, Injun Joe- terrifying....each one pulls me in to read the text. The fabulous, wrapping cover art is also printed at the end of the book, so won't be lost if the dust jacket is damaged. The sewn binding is well constructed and the book lays nearly flat when open, so you may enjoy all of the pictures and layout without damaging the book. The inclusion of a pale blue place marking ribbon is a lovely touch. There is a thoughtful biography of Mark Twain proceeding the story. Also, provided are the author's and illustrators notes.
I have a boy, six going on seven. He is a reader and is happy to consume Magic Tree House and Box Car Children books at alarming speed under the covers at night when he is supposed to be asleep. I'll admit I was missing our former habit of reading together. So we read classics aloud together as a family. For less money than a video game this book will provide hours of family entertainment. I hope my son will be inspired to read it again and again. It will have a place in our library and be a reference for years to come. It is heirloom quality. It would make a very special gift to a favorite boy of any age. In fact, I am considering getting another copy for my father, who loves Twain.
Incidentally, not being able to ascertain the quality of this book through the Amazon web site, I went to a little local bookstore where I could put my hands on it first. I ended up buying it there, paying full price- about $5 more than Amazon was asking. They wrapped the book for free in nice heavy paper and since there was no shipping- I think I came out better for it. Before my son had opened this package, he knew it was a book to be awed by. Awesome it is- mostly for Mark Twains' masterful kntting of prose, but also for the cover and publishing.

This edition is not abridged!

I just want to point out that this hardcover Everyman's Library edition is not abridged. Most of the reviews posted here apply to the Signet mass market edition, which apparently is abridged. The Everyman's edition contains both novels in full.

Books I never got the chance to read in School

I am slowly trying to work my way through Scott's Collection of orks but it is hard yacker trying to translate his frequent comments in Latin or Greek Mythology after nearly 60 years have passed. Were they better educated in those days or have I forgotten too much of my Schooldays Latin, French and Gaelic. Having been born only 8 miles from Culloden Moor I am finding Waverley and its intrigues most interesting and enlightening. Looking forward to enjoying the rest of his Works.

Social Media Users - Read This Book!

Although this was written in the late 90's, it is still very relevant today.

The chapter about revealing secrets in the media helps clarify the cultural evolution that laid the groundwork for today's social media atmosphere. The handling of secrets in public has continued down the trajectory originally described in this book - sometimes less stigma, sometimes more voyeurism into others pain, an artificial sense of community support, & the misguided presumption that outside observers have the right to judge & offer pat solutions to issues that are far more complex.

Another review complained about the number of stories of patients . I disagree with that assessment. Each story helps illustrate how complex secret-keeping can be - & how it is impossible to reduce a person's angst to a simple answer.

Each chapter explains the different factors that go into secret-keeping, & invites us to learn how to be more empathetic.

What is a dangerous secret? A toxic secret? A private matter? A "sweet" secret? Is this my secret to keep or not? This book provides the tools to help clarify these complex questions - & offers assurance for gracefully working through the process of making the best choices that we can through the different seasons of life.

Nice blend of psychology and sociology

I adopted this book for a sociology course that I teach on the family. I had never used this before and found it to be a really intelligent and insightful examination of the role of secrets in family dynamics and relationships in general. Although the book is written by a psychologist, as a sociologist, I deeply appreciated the author's ability to identify social, macro-level factors that play an instrumental role in secret making, secret keeping, and revealing secrets. She is mindful of how gender, social class, ethnicity/race, religion, sexual orientation, and historical events and contexts play a part in secrets. I used the book because much of our presentation of our family is impression management--projecting the most positive image for public view. The reality, however, is that families are imperfect, and we harbor lots of secrets to try to mask our imperfections. This book does a beautiful job of unveiling these dynamics, with appropriate specific examples to illustrate. There is something there for everyone to identify with.

The Secret Life of Families

This is an excellent book. Evan Imber-Black masterfully intertwines stories, experiences, and insights, allowing the reader to discover the profound power that secrets can hold. The stigmatization of secrets in our society has urged many people to be open in excess, which can be just as harmful as secrecy. This book helps to bring a sense of balance onto the scene.

Imber-Black leads us through the secret keeping and opening process, drawing from her years of experience as a family therapist. She defines different kinds of secrets, writes about what kinds of secrets should be kept and what kinds of secrets should be opened, how and when they should be opened, and to whom. She explains how society shapes its citizens' views and behaviors surrounding secrecy. Perhaps most importantly, she talks about the ways that secrets can affect the lives of those who are holding the secret and also those who are outside of the secret. Individualism may be a prized virtue in our society, but one cannot help but be affected by family secrets and the stories that they hold.

This book is well written and easy to read. There is relatively no technical jargon and the flow of ideas is easy to follow. There is some slight repetition, and expansion upon detail which lend to the length of the book, but I think these serve to broaden the reader's perspective and strengthen the overall message.

I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone who has an interest in understanding life and making steps towards personal growth and healthier relationships.
