Procopius is informative, easy to read, providing the reader with a wealth of events and descriptions of nations, peoples and customs. I really enjoyed this book.

Procopius Secret History

After reading multiple histories of the Reign of Byzantine Emporer Justinian, I was delighted by Procopius' take on it. He had been quoted in almost all sources on the subject but this is his "honest" history, written after the death of Justinian, which he claims to be unfettered. Yes, Theodora was certainly a minx and her friendship with Antonina, wife of the great general Bellisarius, certainly caused the general much political and mental harm. Justinian seems fairly balanced except with things involving his wife, and then they both went over the rational edge. This is a most exciting period in Byzantine history and reading Procopius first-person history is a great treat. I enjoyed it immensely and the Kindle price of free just can't be beat. I recommend it highly to any lover of Byzantine history.

Question about "The Wars"

Setting aside the controversial Secret History for a moment, I'd just like to take issue with the books that comprise the "Wars of Justinian." My issue is with the six books that comprise "The Wars." Unfortunately, these are only 3/4 of "The Wars"! There are supposed to be two more books, 7 and 8, that describe the continuation of the campaign against the Goths started by Belisarius and completed by the eunuch Narses. Why are these missing?!?
To be fair, this is a well-organized and edited kindle edition, and having tried and failed to scour the net for years to find e-reader versions of the last two books FOR YEARS, I've concluded that whoever the original source was for the original e-reader files just took it up themselves to cut off the last two books. The loss is all ours.
