A Classic Study of Denial and Belief

I read the previous diaries many years ago, and hardly remember them. But no matter, I found the "Final Entries" very interesting, obviously written by a man with some intelligence, and who was certainly articulate. But no words even approaching wisdom regarding the situation he was in.
A major theme of the book is the one that Hitler drew the right conclusions about the progress of the war, but did not take the necessary action appropriate to those conclusions. Goebbels constantly complains about this.
What is notable is that Goebbels himself is fully aware of the German retreat before the armies of the British Commonwealth, the United States and the Soviet Union, but also does not draw the appropriate conclusion (i.e the best thing for Germany was to immediately surrender).
From his own words we come to realise that the survival of the Nationalist Socialist Party is more important than the survival of Germany, or German lives. This realisation slowly becomes apparent as one reads the diary day by day. One wonders, was this ever a war for the aggrandisement of Germany, or was it a war for the proliferation of the National Socialist agenda.
The fact that Goebbels and his wife preferred to murder their own children rather than allow them to live in a non National Socialist Germany answers the question for me.
