It was in the Fourth Avenue School in Yuma, Arizona, where I spent the toughest three years of my life: the seventh grade. We had a sadistic teacher who forced us to learn by rote part of "A Message to Garcia". That would have been around 1955, just after cattle prods were forbidden in junior high school if anyone was looking. I did not realize at the time that we were learning only a part of an essay, an article written for a newspaper. I came across it again recently while reading Brute: The Life of Victor Krulak, U. S. Marine. If a USMC general thought something was mandatory reading, who am I to disagree? It is truly an inspiring commentary that has doubtlessly given higher goals to men and women around the globe for over one hundred years. And now we can learn firsthand what it was like to deliver that message to Garcia. No, the name of my seventh grade teacher was forgotten long ago, but I thank the old battle ax today for exposing me to responsibility, honor, duty, and the willingness to go the extra mile and do what must be done. I highly recommend this book. No. I won't for you to memorize anything.
