Not a Page Turner

It took me a few days to read this book because it was not a page turner for me. I could either read it or not and come back to it when I wanted something to read. Normally I read a book a day, but not this book.
First of all, the character herself was not realistic. She took a lot of physical abuse from bad characters that would have just about disabled 99% women--yet she came right back as if what had happened was nothing. She did not display many symptoms for beatings after they happened.
Second of all, too many male characters had names starting with the letter "D" that were too similar--I kept getting the characters mixed up and had to go back in the book and read again exactly who they were in relation to the the heroine.
The whole story's gist was suppose to be that she was chasing down $10,000 that was stolen from her--but she not only didn't need the money, she put her life on the line several times and your life is not worth $10,000--especially if you don't need it.
There was not much mystery here for me because I figured out most of it long before the book ended. I mainly did not know who the 4th sibling was until almost the end because this sibling never made an appearance until then, As far as who was behind most of what was going down, I was not really surprised. Not because I didn't not guess who it was, but because I knew it would be someone I did not suspect.
This book was OK because it was something to read to pass the time. I try to finish a book once I start because I don't like leaving a book unfinished.

Good Read

Good read. Sometimes tough to get through the situations. It wants to be a hard boiled detective novel but doesn't quite make it as the situations are a little too unbelievable. But the price is right and it is better than many of the 100 page offerings from indies purporting to be novels.

Wild ride through Memphis! A fun book.

I was just reading a comment in this week's The Week on the movie The Big Sleep, which was on TCM last Wednesday, and this comment reminded me of all of the twists and turns in Trouble is Her Business: "Even co-screenwriter William Faulkner admitted he couldn't explain the plot of this whodunit, based on Raymond Chandler's novel. But it's a classic nonetheless." So if even Faulkner had some trouble following the face-paced storyline of Chandler's novel, I shouldn't feel guilty at having to re-think my way through some of the plot convolutions of Trouble! The plot is exciting and fast-moving, and part of the fun of reading the story is occasionally getting lost in the rough-and-tumble action!
With a bit of study, the plot development moves along smoothly and with continuity, relying largely on the interweaving and recapitulation of characters' appearances. The characters, if not always the intricacies of plot, quickly become familiar and somewhat predictable, as all good characters do. Kate, something of a shape-shifter, is always in a new, fairly bizarre, often accidental, and often gender-bending set of clothes; Oliver is always the dandy metro-sexual, both looking and acting the part; Dorothy Schroeder is a mix of old-lady stuff ("heavenly days," rosewood furniture, and her balcony) and tougher demands (the offer Kate can't refuse), with a touch of Yoda syntax thrown in around her to boot ("Tactful, you aren't."). Vivian's occasional appearances always bring a note of familiarity back to the action, with her cynicism and sassiness and "Dear Heart" salutation as she pretends to (or really does) hit on Kate.
The three things that most focus the novel, though, in addition to the cast of characters, are the fine writing, the consistent point of view, the Memphis locales, and the 40's touchstones. The writing per se is excellent, with a consistent level of discourse, readable and short sentences, paragraphs, and chapters, and a remarkable attention to detail in every way - diction, description, characterization, and structure. We really see everything through Kate's eyes, as the point-of-view of the novel is what we usually call "character-angle" or "third-person limited." Though technically the point of view is third-person, we generally see only into Kate's mind and emotions, from her "angle," so the story which unifies the plot is very much Kate's story. We wonder what disaster she is going to encounter next, who is going to hit, shoot, poison, or drown her, and we worry about whether she will survive it.
Kate's misadventures with the river, the bridges, the railroads, and Front Street and environs are only a few of the times that these Memphis landmarks give us readers our bearings. The Rhapsody as a foil for the Peabody (swans vs. ducks and Corinthian pillars vs. hunting lodge) and the joints on Beale Street, as well as such things as the Pink Palace come along often enough to give us a sense of direction when we might otherwise be a bit lost. The only notable landmark that seems to be missing (unless I have forgotten it) is the Zoo, which was a flourishing institution in the 40's.
The other major and colorful focus is all of the wonderful forties touchstones. Everything from the old cars with running-boards (pre-war leftovers from the thirties), to the big Buicks and touring cars, all the talk of trains and Union Station, with no planes except for two-motored amusements puttering overhead, Boss Crump. One can almost see the Joan-Crawford squared-off shoulder-pads, fedoras, pin-stripes, and even stockings--with seams, no less--on both the women and the men, and the soldiers going off to the war with all the talk of War Bonds, Draft Boards, and blackouts and ration coupons and even Victory gardens. And the smart, sassy dialogue and the mobster overtones and undertones with Whitey and Drayce complete the very full picture. Cigarettes are everywhere, and the booze flows freely from page to page.
