The stakes are high for both the relationship between anti-hero Victor Bayne and his boyfriend Jacob Marks and solving the mystery of the horrible sex crimes being committed at the retirement home. Relentlessly, the story moves towards its conclusion with heart-thumping suspense and genuinely emotional moments. This is a well-developed and well-balanced story of a suspenseful paranormal mystery and a gay relationship without affectations or stereotypes.

PsyCops Better Than Ever

This is the fourth story in the terrific PsyCops series. If you have not read the first three give yourself the pleasure (literally) of doing so, though it's not necessary to understand this story. JC Price's writing is flawless, and she also happens to be very gracious to her fans, making herself available for reader input in various ways including her PsyCops blog. Her writing style just grabs you with its authenticity. Not only are the crime capers creative and suspenseful, but the emotional and sexual content is raw and very, very hot. It's rare to find all these qualities between the same cover; I've searched high and low. In this series the government has learned to exploit psychic abilities by identifying gifted individuals and literally pressing them into service. The lead, Victor, is a uniquely gifted gay psychic working as a detective for the Chicago PD. He's great at his job, but because of his painful history, struggling with an ability that has truly disrupted his life, he has trouble relating to other people. That is until he meets his lover Jacob Marks in the first story (Among the Living). Jacob sinks his hooks into him and refuses to let go no matter how awkward Victor feels or what paranormal craziness ensues around them. In this fourth novella Jacob and Victor's relationship is challenged by stressors from within and without all related to a particularly nasty case of paranormal rape. There is a tension sustained throughout the series about Victor's past that will be explored in the next installment. Thank goodness the author is prolific! You'll love Victor's wry, self-deprecating sense of humor as the narrator and I predict you'll root for Victor and Jacob just as passionately as I do! Enjoy!

Vic and Jacob are moving closer together but there are still secrets between them that may tear them apart. In this installment of the PsyCop series, our intrepid duo have just moved into their new place and a new case is wearing on Jacob. As well, Vic discovers he, himself, might as well be a ghost as far as the internet is concerned and it appears as if the infamous Heliotrope Station, also known as Camp Hell, never existed.
Our favourite precog, Lisa, comes for a visit and adds her burdensome (to her) “si no” powers to Jacob’s team, helping to solve a puzzling crime and guiding Vic in his quest for answers.
Through it all, Jacob’s love comes through, but I can’t help but feel that Victor will need to work on his trust issues soon or risk losing something special. His commitment to Jacob seems less at times than Jacob’s to him.
However, great action, both in and out of the bedroom, as well as character development, make this a must read. I even forgive the “duh-duh-dun!” cliff hanger-ish type ending.

Wasn't Jacob a bit creepy in this book? I've always regarded him as the rock upon which Victor could stand, but he kept me on the edge until the end of the book. And, beware, the end of the book is open, I was for once glad for the insight on the first chapter of Camp Hell: A Psycop Novel.
I loved the story. For once it's Jacob who's having difficulties in his case and Victor (with a distressed Lisa) come to the rescue. In the previous books Jacob was the one in control, but in this book the single-mindedness with which he pursues both the resolution of his case and Victor borders on possession. Victor for once seems to be able to assert himself, even the way he embraces his jealousy was a surprise for me. He no longer accepts things at their face value, on the contrary, he questions his future and his past and he begins to handle his psychic ability.
Jacob and Victor are changing and I really want to see what they become in the next book.
