No chapters; bad typeface

I was excited to see a collection of such great books all for one low price but my experience was just short of total disappointment. Although there are breaks for the beginning of each book, there are no chapter breaks whatsoever! With an epic novel of Ben-Hur's bulk that's a deal breaker.

A Very Different Whodunnit!

First, I must tell you that I have a soft spot for sheep, having spent many a sleepless night in the lambing shed. Since Three Bags Full is written from the perspective of a flock of sheep living near a small Irish coastal village, I found the premise fresh and intriguing. The characters are first and foremost, well, sheep, who set out to solve the murder of their beloved (at least by the sheep) but eccentric shepherd. The fun comes as the sheep attempt to determine the murderer from a motley collection of villagers. As the sheep wrestle with concepts like motive and justice, their investigation turns up the dark underbelly of a town and a shepherd with secrets, but those secrets are filtered through their innocent eyes. I enjoyed this book. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone, but anyone who likes rural life and a fresh and unusual approach to a well-worn genre would likely enjoy it.

Garbled and Confusing

I found the book confusing and garbled. Apparently it is a translation. Perhaps in the original language there might not have been as much confusion. The premise suggested a mystery solved by a flock of sheep intent on uncovering the truth behind their shepherd’s death. As the dialogue moved between the sheep and the humans, the story simply became too complicated. Random implausible acts only vaguely linked the mystery to the situation, such as the appearance of a missing ram whose vast experience manipulates the flock like a four-legged Yoda. I wasn’t sure the story was meant as a philosophical allegory or just a complex fable about how sheep might learn to function without their shepherd. I stuck with it till the end and was disappointed.

Well, I finished it so I'll have to give it more than one.

Made no sense. The real killing was never explained. There was all kinds of ghost/soul stuff I couldn't get. Certainly found nothing funny. If the sheep had been allowed to be more human it might have made better sense. Also that other killing...nope. Really cannot recommend, to my sadness. One reviewer said he didn't like this or the Catcher in the Rye, I also didn't like both!

A funny, interesting, useful and alphabetized look at Japan

There are alphabetized entries on a wide range of subjects (as noted in the publisher's blurb above) which breaks things down into easily skimmed bits. Nothing is in depth, but a wide range is covered. This would make excellent reading before a trip to or a prolonged stay in Japan.

Rather than necessarily reading cover to cover I would recommend first skimming the actual topics, then reading the ones of most interest right away (okay, I can't help it...topics ranging from Brad Pitt to ancient poets to geologic history to modern culture are covered). Then, when you are coming up on something specific (such as a trip to Nara) you can flip to the parts that are relevant (the big Buddha, the afore mentioned poet, the creation myth etc). Make sure you read the 'eating' topic as well.

The style is amusing and light and my only quibbles are a few things that seem a little out-dated even though there is a 2009 publication date. Obviously the author could not have predicted the 2011 earthquake so that is not mentioned in the earthquake section--well maybe he did a little bit (there was mention of a 'long overdue big one'). Also, the section regarding the drinking and driving--this is now considered (at least where I am) a Very Serious Problem. To the point that if you are a passenger in a car being driven by someone who has been drinking (and 0.03 is the limit) then you go to jail too--for years--just for riding in the car.

One problem with the Kindle version is that some of the typesetting is off and there has been a fairly frequent substitution of letters with a symbol that does not quite fit--and without going through every single instance I am associating it with a long o. Distracting, but better once I got used to it.

In any case I found this a very fun read and quite useful. I would give this 9 stars out of 10 if I could, but in the land of the Amazonian -5-star rating system I will give it the bump up--my quibbles were small, the formatting issue was at least consistent (and can be fixed hint-hint to the publisher) and really, I quite enjoyed reading it.

Fun overview of Japanese Culture, History, and Quirky Facts

I was looking for a fun read about Japan when I came across this book. Even though it is not a traditional travel guide, I think this book would be a perfect companion to a Fodor's or Frommer's guidebook for anyone who is interested in Japan or will be traveling there in the future. The book is very easy to navigate. The subjects are broken down into short blurbs that are organized in alphabetical order. Each entry was informative and well written and many of them were exceptionally funny. Overall, I loved this book and would highly recommend this guide to anyone who wants to learn more about Japan or anyone who just loves history, trivia, or is looking for a laugh and some entertainment for several nights of reading. And the price (I paid just over $3) is a great deal in my opinion. Thank you for the good read!

This is the most expensive version for the Kindle, which I chose because I wanted to read the book from cover to cover, and I planned to do lots of markups (and since the arrival of the Kindle, I have become reluctant to highlight paper copies with gallons of yellow highlights. In looking at the paper copies of "The City of God", none seem superior to the Marcus Dodds translation, although the version of Dodds translation in the Modern Library edition seems to have more editorial features.such as an extensive index, but in a Kindle edition with full searching ability, an index is unnecessary.

I read the Kindle on my PC with a relatively wide (24 inch) monitor, and had no trouble at all. The notes were very well done, easier to find, and return to your point of departure than with a paper copy.

Regarding those who perhaps found trouble reading the paper copy, it is important to realize the time, the place, and the author's objectives. Augustine is THE premier theologian of the ancient world, and perhaps of the church as a whole, but he was addressing in this book a local crisis, where the barbarians were at the gates of Rome. The book ends up being a great mixture of apologetics, exegesis (especially on Genesis and the Deuteronomic history) and inspiration. No one would be reading this book except other Bishops and priests.

If you need to read "The City of God" on a Kindle, this is the one to get. If you must have paper, get the same translation, in the Modern Library Edition, if possible (It may be out of print. I don't see the copy I got on Amazon.)

Night World Fan Guide

As a fan guide this falls short on several fronts. Other then being a concise location for Night World facts and some insights into the novels themselves from the creator (a lot of which can be read on her website) there isn't a whole lot of *new* information. This is basically like having the Night World wikipedia in book form (except, of course, with better editing and fact checking).

There's brief accounting of each of the 9 Night World books currently avail (at time of publication), character descriptions for the 'major' players and interesting notations on when characters overlap into each book (such as the fact Ash Redfern pops up in 3 novels) and the trivia questions could be fun for Night World fans to quiz each other with.

However, when the words "Ultimate Fan Guide" are used, more is expected. Better insight, more detailed histories and character breakdowns, deleted scenes or plot lines, what it took to update the books form their original late 90's release to the recent re-release (since the original novels cited the year 2000 as the day of the big event, because the books were more or less contemporary to their publishing dates, but when Strange Fate was finally announced as being publish Smith mentioned having to update the other books to coincide with the near year in Strange Fate).

This 'fan guide' doesn't deliver enough for the longtime fans. For new fans, who only recently came into the series, this may be enough. For those of us who have spent the last decade (and more) discussing what will happen in the mythical tenth book, getting excited over new short stories and blurbs on Smith's website, hopeful the half a dozen times a rumored release date for Strange Fate surfaced...its not up to par.

Definite fun read

I'm surprised that no one reviewed this yet. I read it earlier today, and it came as a surprise that it was actually quite enjoyable. The guide book comes with all that you need to know as far as the history of the Night World and its' members are concerned. There is also a couple of quizzes included in the book, and also a foreword written by none other than L.J. Smith herself, and while you're at it, there are a few pages also where she answers the readers' question. There's pages of tidbits of what you need to know about witches, ghouls, shape shifters, and vampires, their origins, and more pages dedicated to a bit of a Q and A session.

To top it off, the Night World guide book also includes a chapter except from the upcoming NW book, Strange Fate. As being a long-time reader of L.J. Smith, I absolute recommend this book to all those who want to brush up on their Night World history.

Strange Fate??? WHERE ARE YOU???

This book is such a tease, but it makes me really excited to HOPE that STRANGE FATE will be out soon... Has a good amount of info to help you remember things from the series if you haven't read the books in awhile. I love the whole Night World series - some of the best books with my all time favorite characters that I've read. I read the books from the Night World series when they first came out when I was a teen and now I'm ~ 30 yrs old but STILL waiting on STRANGE FATE. Love LJ Smith but am extremely annoyed that it's taking so long for her to write this story... Anyway... Hopefully I'm not in a nursing home before she finishes. :( I recommend these books, but it's a big letdown that there is no finish (yet) after all these years...

With the moment upon her, with her back on a soft quilt, and with the bright blue April sky gleaming down at her, a wave of ease washed over her. In another hour or two it would be dusk, and then night would fall.

If I am fortunate, I will return to my mother's house this evening with Tarquin's seed inside me. I may bear his child. I may become his wife, a soldier's wife.

Tarquin's fingers traced down the length of her bodice. She fetched a heavy sigh as the whalebone stays released her and the first welcome full breath of air filled her lungs. She knew, from her own practice of dressing herself in the morning, that her breasts perked through the thin cotton muslin. She watched as Tarquin's eyes grew large at the sight of her taut nipples, her ruby pink areoles, her erect breasts. His wonder at the sight of her body filled her with a strange kind of dread. Would he be disappointed in her? She certainly hoped not.

Tarquin eased himself between her legs, spreading her thighs apart with his hands. He raked her skirt and her petticoats up to her waist, draping her petticoats on her hips, her sex exposed to him.

Fairytale atmosphere with an erotic twist

Rose Red and Black Bear, an Erotic Fairy Tale, is a partial retelling of the German Snow White and Rose Red fairy tale. In this story, Rose Red's family offers shelter to a bear during the winter. The bear ends up being a prince who has been bespelled by an ugly and wicked dwarf, and once the bear kills the dwarf he turns back into his true form and marries one of the sisters. In Ms. Williams' telling of the story, she has eroticized the relationship between Rose Red and the bear. She changes the tale somewhat by imbuing Rose Red with a sexual curiosity that gives her quite a bad reputation in her village, giving her two failed sexual relationships, and making her the target of the prince/bear's romantic attentions rather than her sister.

Ms. Williams has done a very nice job of maintaining the fairytale atmosphere of this story by using the language and cadence that we usually associate with such tales. She also develops Rose Red's character enough to make her seem like a real girl with complex emotions. Rose Red is not sticky-sweet like Snow White appears to be; she feels anger and lust, and her verbal battles with the evil dwarf on the occasions that she encounters the extremely nasty fellow prove that can hurl insults with the best of them. I felt like the most entertaining scenes in the story are the ones that she shares with the dwarf, because neither of them pulls their punches as they shout invectives at each other.

I have admit feeling that the story dragged a little bit in the middle as Rose Red pines for her lover, waiting for him to return from war. I kept waiting for the bear to make an appearance, since he is one of the main characters in the tale. This wasn't enough to lose my interest, however, because appearances by the dwarf kept the action alive.

It is my understanding that Rose Red and Black Bear, an Erotic Fairy Tale is only half of a complete story and that Ms. Williams intends to tell Snow White's tale next. I'm very interested to see how she handles this given the ending to Rose Red. I'll look forward to getting to know Snow White a little better and to seeing how this story differs from the version that Walt Disney made so famous. Fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm all seem to have a dark edge, so somehow I don't think that jolly dwarves with names like "Sleepy" and "Doc" are going to make an appearance.
