Two Great Adventure-Thrillers for the price of one!

Desmond Bagley is a Grand-Master of the Adventure-Thriller Genre. As such, he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Alistair MacLean, Duncan Kyle, Helen MacInnis, and Hammond Innis. In a review of one of Bagley’s books, MacLean wrote, “He writes better than I do.” In these “two-fers” you get two great thrillers for the piece of one. A GREAT deal and a GREAT read!

Not the place to start....

Desmond Bagley was an excellent adventure/thriller writer through the 60s and 70s, and many of his books I enjoyed immensely (see my other mostly positive reviews of his work on Amazon). Unfortunately, this particular collection contains two of his weakest books, neither of which is a fair indication of his quality or his typical style. So while die-hard fans will get around to reading these two stories for completeness' sake if nothing else, this collection is definitely not the best place to introduce yourself to this great writer.

'The Spoilers' is arguably his worst book, in my opinion the only real "dud" in his entire career. When a wealthy tycoon's daughter dies of a heroin overdose, he offers a blank cheque for the drug trade to be smashed at any price. An interesting setup, but it quickly degenerates into a laughably overblown story, with an ordinary doctor and his associates suddenly pulling a Rambo and trying to take down a criminal cartel single-handedly. There are some interesting characters, but the story is too over-the-top and unbelievable, and the book is definitely not representative of Bagley's usual output. If this is your introduction to Bagley, you might not be inclined to give him a second chance!

'Juggernaut' is different, it was Bagley's final book and he died before completing it. This gives the book a somewhat uncompleted feel, with a very sketchy narrative in some parts. Again not typical of Bagley's normal style, it somewhat reminiscent of Hammond Innes with its more descriptive feel and much stronger focus on character than on action. A British transport convoy through Africa finds itself transformed into a mobile humanitarian mission when civil war explodes across the region. Trapped, the convoy must try to escape the war zone while still providing aid and transport for the ordinary people caught up in the war. A good story, but as I say, is let down by an inconsistent narrative that was written in after Bagley's death to link the set pieces together.

Simply put, both new fans and die-hards are better off looking elsewhere. There are much better Bagley books to enjoy first before you read these two weaker efforts.

Masterful Bagley Yarns!

The Spoilers started slowly for me. It begins with the death of a British tycoon's daughter caused by a heroin overdose. Drug overdoses turn me off, personally. The story picked up speed as it went on and seemed believable enough. Using the cover of the advance party for shooting a movie, the tycoon sends a team of specialists into the Middle East to destroy a huge shipment of heroin that he has gotten wind of. The action picks up rapidly and I won't spoil it for anyone who enjoys a good action adventure read. Juggernaut is also action packed, but takes place in a fictitious oil-rich African country where westerners transporting heavy equipment to the oil field are caught up in a civil war. The juggernaut is the heavy duty platform which hauls a 300 ton transformer for a power plant at the oil field. When their way is blocked , they are forced to seek refuge in a neighboring country. The problem is getting to the border. I think I enjoyed this one more than The Spoilers, but again, it's two good reads for the price of one!

Simple ... the best

This exposition is Arthur Pink at his best. There is no such thing as a bad commentary by Pink. I own 90% of his published writings and in my opinion this is his best work. The Hebrew writer (which Pink makes the best argument I've heard for Paul's authorship) intended for this epistle to show the physical things of the Old Testament as a shadow of the spiritual things in the New Testament. Pink masterfully follows this theme! Mission accomplished! This is definitely written at a college-reading level and a "must read" for every minister who has put his faith in Jesus the Christ.

An Original Source for Most of the Contemporary Commentaries

This review concerns the one-volume commentary, ISBN 0-8010-6857-6.

I mainly purchased Pink's commentary because almost without exception, the recently-written commentaries cited his work. I am not seminary-trained; I teach a SS class. This commentary is a great resource for me.

Pink wrote this in the mid-20th century, and of course used the KJV for his work. I don't use the KJV, but I found this didn't hurt the use of Pink's work much at all. There were a few sections that had lost a bit of utility, but for the most part, the commentary was valid for the ESV that I use.

This commentary is not a scholarly work, and there are no uses of greek or hebrew in the text. It is an expository commentary, and this makes it accessible for those without training in biblical languages (such as myself). Where original languages are referenced, they are transliterated.

Pink is not Arminian in his outlook, but unlike some of the older non-Arminian commentaries, he does not follow Calvin or Luther blindly. His work differs from theirs in several places, such as chapter 6. On the whole, the commentary follows the doctrines of grace very well and has no mix of semi-Pelagianism in it.

Pink does not include a bibliography, which helps keep the volume uncluttered. Extensive bibliographies are available in newer commentaries (see Word Biblical Commentary, for example) which are more inclusive due to their recent date of publication. He also does not include chapter notes, but cites his sources by name within the chapters. The book is over 1300 pages, and all of it is expository material, so you won't go wanting in any section of the text.

This is not a stand-alone commentary; you'll want a more contemporary one to go with it (for reasons stated above), but for sheer volume of exposition on a difficult but critically important book of Scripture, this commentary is a must-have for the student or teacher of the Bible. God has blessed the Church with learned men through history, and A. W. Pink is certainly one of them; I recommend this commentary to one and all.

I started reading Pink about 5 years ago and hav'nt found anything bad yet. I believe his treatment of Hebrews was Exceptional but before you start you may want to finish up any books you have already started. Very indepth!

Mostly Worthwhile In Terms of Putting Scientific Myths in One Easy Place to Critique

This repeats the almost wholly mythological history of the birth of modern science, putting it all in one short volume, which is great as long as your plan is to critique the myths (such as the flat Earth myth - scholastics didn't believe the Earth was flat, that's a bogus lie of post Cartesian scientists - Aquinas even gives its circumference).

The explanation is certainly mechanical, and by being so treats evolution as though it weren't evolutionary. Much like the neo-Darwinists he appears to admire so much. A more evolved being is so in terms of degrees of freedom, the determinism of mechanistic science therefore destroys the very notion of evolved, replacing it with 'randomly changed and adapted'. The 'adapted' part is itself problematic, since neo-Darwinists don't seem to have realized that what any given living being adapts to is itself part of the same evolutionary process, and not pre-given as they assume.

I found Book 6 of The Kent Family Chronicles-" The Warriors", to be the best so far.The Civil War is in its closing months and Jeremiah Kent, second son of Jephta, walks hundreds of miles to Georgia, following his promise to his dying commander,Captain Rose who is worried about the fates of his wife and daughter when the Union Army seizes his plantation.Serena Rose, the captains daughter, is an evil vindictive young woman who drives Jeremiah to such a state of madness that she virtually forces him to shoot her to save his life.Realising that this act has put him beyond the pale, he changes his name and joins forces with an Indian.The pair become buffalo hunters and eventually outlaws. Michael Boyle, former protege of Amanda Kent, joins the crew of a company building the Union Pacific railway, where he meets Hannah, the daughter of a whisky selling pedlar. They marry,move to her home state and proceed to build a successful business. Gideon, blinded in one eye, works in a railway yard but soon sees the injustices perpetrated on the workers who are frequently injured and is determined to begin a union. Loius Kent is heavily involved in fraudulent stockmarket manipulations and comes to his just desserts.

Keeps your attention

I have read all of the 7 Kent Family books twice. 20 years apart. It is very informative and although I almost become depressed along with the Kent themselves as I read along. Anyone familiar with the western expansion of the country will enjoy this book. I just keep hoping for the Kents' to find some happiness without having to fight and scrap for every inch of it.

War is (still) not Civil

John Jakes keeps the pace slow in the sixth book of his Bicentennial series, covering the end of the Civil War and just three years beyond. This time, two of Jephtha Kent's sons take the spotlight -- eldest Gideon and youngest Jeremiah -- as they illustrate two different vantage points of the young Confederate soldier. Jeremiah is on a long, miserable errand for his commanding officer, now dead: He must desert the ranks and track across the Georgia countryside to the man's estate to deliver a letter to his wife and look after her and his daughter in these brutal times. Jeremiah completes the fool's errand and is forever scarred by it. Things get very ugly at the plantation, causing this young Kent to take a different view of his fellow man. It was good to see Jakes veer off formula with the character of the daughter, Serena. I thought I could see exactly where this sad tale was heading, but I was wrong.

Gideon, meanwhile, encounters his own suffering (because this series IS all about suffering!). He gets imprisoned at Fort Delaware. All in all, he fares better than his little bro, proving to be one of the level heads in this book.

Michael Boyle, Amanda Kent's onetime young Irish assistant, is another level head here. He enlists and becomes a soldier, himself, now in his 30s, then postwar takes a part in the burgeoning railroad's big cut across the West.

Amanda's son Louis is largely on the sidelines. And Michael's illicit encounter with Louis' wife Julia is heavily referenced but seems to remain unfinished business.

Jakes stays piercing and vivid in this sixth book, and so wonderfully easy to read. On to Book 7!
