This full-cast recording suffers from uneven narration. Some characters, and the full range of their emotions, are strongly portrayed, in particular the protagonist Enna. The consistently excellent voice of the background reader weaves its own spell and ties the cast and plot together. However, the simpering and grating voicing of Princess Isi detracts from the listening experience. Her gift comes with many perils as Enna struggles to allow herself to be consumed with the fire she creates. Her urge to burn is problematic. Musical interludes add atmosphere and mood to this full-cast production. Some of the actors’ voices are pitched similarly, but Cynthia Bishop, as the book’s narrator, keeps the action flowing even if her interjections into the dialogue occasionally are jarring. Chelsea Mixon reads Enna’s part with fluidity, and the entire ensemble cast, including such regulars as Daniel Bostick, Bruce Coville, Tamora Pierce, and Adam Wahlberg, are likewise fluent and smooth in their portrayals. Fans of the earlier title will be hooked. A welcome addition to audio collections. Grades 7-10. --Sally Miculek

Passed the "sniff" test

This book was purchased at the request of my teenage daughter so I cannot provide a helpful review. What I can say, from my daughter's actions, is that the book "smells" good. Not sure what it is about new books, but the first thing she does is randomly open the book and stick her face in it to get a whiff. Her reaction indicated that it did pass the "smell" test. That is worth two stars in my book as a dad. The book did arrive before the expected time in good condition which is also worth two stars. As far as content, I will probably never be able to review that since there are many other books that are much higher up my reading list.

I have read several books by Shannon Hale, and have enjoyed them very much. This story may be a little intense, however, for young readers, because several people are destroyed by burning. I did like "The Goose Girl" better, but I did enjoy the continuation of several of the characters from "The Goose Girl" in this story.

exceptional experience

I have been reading and reading and it doesn't end. This was a wonderful way to enjoy, again, the adventure's of the Allen Quartermain that I have loved for so many years. The stories are exactly how I remember them. I never get bored reading Mr. Haggard's works. These just happen to be a favorite.

Dated but still good

This is a collection of 50 of Henry Rider Haggard's (1856-1925) books mainly set in 19th century Africa. He is known for his swashbuckling adventure novels often set in lost worlds. It is difficult to review a collection of 50 books all of which are out of copyright and obtainable free from a number of sources however if you like Rider Haggard's type of writing it is easier to buy a cheap collection like this rather than to try and collect them all yourself. My only disappointment with this Kindle version is the lack of maps and line drawings from the originals, there are not too many and the Kindle is well capable of displaying them. I have read many of the original books, long ago, and the drawings or more particularly the maps add greatly to the stories.
The books are not particularly easy to read as the style of writing has changed markedly since the 1900s and if used to modern novels they are fairly slow going as they use many phrases etc that are no longer in common usage. They do give a feel for the 19th century rather better than a dry history book however do not take some of the facts presented too literally, I do not think these are books that have the instant "grab attention" feature however they are worth persevering with as the stories are very good, sufficiently good in fact that several have been made into films including "King Solomon's Mines" and "She", neither of these are however stand alone novels and this collection allows you to read these and others in context.

Some may find these stories upsetting as they are certainly NOT politically correct and have a very imperialistic view of native Africans. However, if you can get past that, they are pretty good yarns.
