a must for daily inspiration

bought this one for my brother. Original one bought for mother in law, and after she passed away I took her copy back. Have read it daily for 4 years now, and will continue. Also started writing birthdays, anniversaries and other special events in the margins of the day of the events. Not only keeps track of special days/people, it also reminds me that morning of someones birthday, anniversary, etc. Hope this will become a gift to pass along to others,

The other reviewers appear to be students who read or purchased this book for a class.

Let me take the other perspective, as an executive, within a startup that has just received funding. We want to put the best corporate governance in place and avoid any missteps today which might negatively impact our exit valuation.

Our company is still private, but as we bring sophisticated investors onto our Board of Directors and Advisory Council, we want to have realistic expectations and superior results. As a private company, we're not currently concerned with Sarbanes-Oxley sections 404 (Assessment of Financial Controls) or 302 (Responsibility for Financial Reports), but preparation today should pay off in the future.

I found the book helpful, in thinking about how we can work with an outstanding Board of Directors and maximize their contribution to our results and valuation. I went as far as taking many of deKluyver's suggestions and adding them to our Board Book.

This book was recommended by some of the bloggers for HBR. With the caveat that the book is written for established companies, I would recommend this to anyone who hopes to grow their firm into the ranks of mature, established and nationally recognized companies.

The basic coverage with minimal bias

I use this as a textbook for courses on comparative international corporate governance at both the BBA and the MBA level, It is US-oriented, but covers the basics well. A difference from some of the texts in this area is that this text is not written by activists seeking to promote their pet set of corporate reforms. Rather, it describes the current system, how it came to be, and highlights inconsistencies and shortcomings. It is also relatively short and does not include horror stories and extraneous cases, which makes it well adapted to use in a case course. It is not a "course in a box" and would not be suitable for use without outside examples.

Very theoretical and at times hard to read for its heavy style. Not what I was expecting from a 'Primer,' but there are a few bits of wisdom if you can keep attention long enough to note them for when you find a primer that can really explain the basics of governance in a simpler more practical format.

Johnny Texas still works after half a century

When I was 6 years old in 1950, my grandmother took me to a special event at the local drug store in Yorktown, Texas, which as of three years ago still had the original iron hitching posts along the sidewalk. The event was the local release of Johnny Texas, and Carol Hoff was signing copies of her new book. Recently my sister came across my copy and sent it to me. It's pretty ragged by now, having been read several times by me and having subsequently gone through a number of other kids. But I was overjoyed to find that it still has the same magic it had 50 years ago. I recently reviewed a number of books for a school curriculum program, and it was daunting to find just how muddy, disjointed and confused--both emotionally and philosophically--most "modern" juvenile fiction has become. All these years of pop psychology and political correctness have taken their toll. We no longer tell stories kids are expected to enjoy; we indoctrinate future citizens of the gray zone. Johnny Texas is about real people confronting and handling challenges in a real world. Their motivations are recognizable, their moral choices unambiguous. The history is fascinating. More importantly, real kids in or out of Texas will still find this one heck of a great story. Given current literacy levels, I'd say it's good for ages 8 - 12--also for English as a Second Language programs.
