A novel of extraordinary power from a writer to watch.
In a small flat in London, a young man is turning to gold. But before he dies, before his skin and eyes and tongue harden into a golden death mask, he wants to share the amazing story of his life. Born and raised on the barren Orkney Islands off the coast of Scotland, his childhood is a brutal one, devoid of tenderness. It is a miracle when he meets Tracy, falls in love, and discovers his true gift: the merest touch of him is enough to induce visions of angels and orchids. The physical heights he is able to reach-and to which he can bring others-go far beyond any normal sensual pleasure. Armed with this inexplicable talent, he makes his way to London, where he falls in with a group of teens forced to make a living on the street.
Luke Sutherland's modern-day myth about the power of love veers from stratosphere to gutter, from visions of heaven to the all-too-mortal yearning for even one glimpse of it. With Venus as a Boy Sutherland has written a moving, poetic novel that manages to imbue the harsh realities of life on the street with a mesmerizing and ethereal beauty.

After a hard life punctuated by moments of beauty, a young man finds himself turning to gold in this gritty and sometimes gorgeous novel, Sutherland's third but his first published in the U.S. D grows up in Scotland's Orkney Islands, a stark, treeless landscape of "more rabbits than people. And more importantly, no police." Tormented by his schoolmates ("shitty little two-faced bastards") but friends with almost all of the girls, D, along with his first "soul mate" Finola, is brutally beaten. Later, palling around with the same tough who thrashed him, he turns two-faced himself—tormenting a black boy and betraying "the people who mattered" most. But he also discovers his amazing gift: he can give people sexual pleasure unlike anything they've previously experienced. Tracy, his first love, calls him Cupid; D himself sees visions of stars and angels. When Tracy refuses his proposal of marriage, D leaves Orkney and becomes a hotel dishwasher, where he begins loving up anyone—male or female—he encounters. "I got fond of bringing folks to their knees," he says. Those he touches weep with desire and release: "Healing hands. The Second Coming. God's gift. I've heard it all." But can D—who goes by Désirée in drag—find true love in his own harsh and drug-addled life? Alt-musician Sutherland is a cultural darling in the U.K. (Jelly Roll, his debut, was shortlisted for the Whitbread First Novel Award), but American audiences may find that as the book progresses, the sublime inches toward the merely sensational.

'From the start it glistens with teasing self-confidence, spinning a yarn that has you intrigued ... you end up hooked on the voice which leaves you stunned' Tom Adair, Scotsman 'What a strange and beautiful story this is. It is slight but packed with incident and feeling: raw and poetic, earthy and unearthly. The picaresque flourishes in Sutherland's everyday ... In Sutherland's brutal, tender wonderland, miracles might occur' The Times 'Intense and crackling with streetwise energy ... his writing is powerful, astute and full of promise' Independent 'Sutherland has a way of diving in to the heart of an individual that is enthralling ... he has a sure touch with pacing and phrasing' Carrie O'Grady, Guardian

Extremely sad and extremely good written.

"Fate isn't all-compassing. It doesn't own you. You get signs and make your choice. Sometimes you make the wrong choice and die before your time or spend your whole life in atonement. But it's the choices you make that are fate. The trick is understanding why you're here and what you're made for.
All I felt sure of was that only true love would make me whole..."
Venus as a Boy is about a man desperately seeking for love.
A man with an understanding that only true love can bring him closer to himself and God.
A man with a knowledge that only spreading love can give you Heaven.
A man with a realization that all his attempts for find true love were doomed to failure because the search for another love was actually WHAT he was made for.
"True love was never going to be my reward...My reward is the understanding that , for those I've touched, knowledge of me is knowledge of the divine."
Extremely sad and extremely good written.

Appearances are hell, empathy is heaven
By Dr Jacques COULARDEAU
A strange and fascinating book indeed, right from the Orkney Islands, or something like that, from the far distant North of the United Kingdom, or Scotland if you want to be more precise. And that definitely is the first subject of the book. We get down into the violence of life on these islands, violence against the weak of course, all kinds of weak people, It is fun to be violent with the weak, especially if there is a reason like they are black, they are gay, they are girls, or just they are boys who would not fight back. What about the story of such a boy? Submissive, he will find pleasure not in the violence per se but in the submissive humiliation he will cultivate as a power over the bully, a power that will make him look for ways to give that bully pleasure even if it is at the cost of his own suffering in his hands or under his blows. And little by little, discovering sexual pleasure and all, sex will be a tool to give pleasure even to those who would refuse it straight away if they had not been charmed into accepting it, or even raped into accepting it. The main character thus develops a life of subservient sex in which he finds the pleasure he wants in the pleasure he gives. His initial submissive attitude he experienced with the bully on his island will lead him to get hooked to a pimp in London who sells the services of several originally male people who have kept their maleness, more or less, and satisfy the needs of men who are quite willing to accept gay sex provided it is from men who seem to be women by the way they dress, the hormonal body they have developed or the transsexual trip they have taken. It becomes poignant at the end because the man has been nurtured with hormones by his pimp for him to develop a female body, with a male organ. As an act of repayment, he decides not to use condoms any more and he gets hepatitis and he dies of it in a lot of suffering, turning gold little by little, loved in an extreme way by some gay bashing boy he raped one night with the help of two of his colleagues. The boy got attached to the experiment that turns into an experience and an absolute love that accompanies the man to his own accepted death. This novel about self-realization in extreme alienation is the denunciation of alienation, if we want to look at things from a political point of view, but it is also the poetical evocation of the enormous human power every single man has in himself, and women just as well, to create a full world of freedom and creativity, human compassion and empathy within that alienated frame. This is the extreme resilience the human species has and it explains why the worst possible wars or horrors do not deprive the survivors or the surviving victims to have a full life afterwards, partially based on forgetting and essentially based on creativity and the sublimation of the alienated episodes into positive thinking and action. You will enjoy this small novel if you are not perverted enough to be a fundamentalist about sex, if your empathy is bigger than your attraction or rejection of this other (not so other though) side of the moon or aurora borealis.

Weird and wonderful
By maria1971
Why haven't more people read and reviewed this book???
This is the story of a boy with a gift - the gift to touch people with love, giving them visions of heaven.
He is generous with his gift, offering his body up to be used and abused, perhaps because he knows how good receiving that love feels, having seen the visions once himself.
However, while he's able to give love to others, the love he desires remains elusive to him, and though he goes through life hopeful of getting that feeling back, we know it's too late as he is telling his story from his death bed where he is slowly turning into gold.
This book could well be a modern-day fairy tale, apart from that fairy tales are not usually associated with harsh reality and squalid backdrops.
Despite its sordid "surroundings", this is a beautiful book.
