In the seemingly ordinary Amish home of Grace Byler, secrets abound. Why does her mother weep in the night? Why does her father refuse to admit something is dreadfully wrong? Then, in one startling moment, everything Grace assumed she knew is shattered. Her mother's disappearance leaves Grace reeling and unable to keep her betrothal promise to her long-time beau. Left to pick up the pieces of her life, Grace questions all she has been taught about love, family, and commitment.
Heather Nelson is an English grad student, stunned by a doctor's diagnosis. Surely fate would not allow her father to lose his only daughter after the death of his wife a few years before. In denial and telling no one she is terminally ill, Heather travels to Lancaster County--the last place she and her mother had visited together. Will Heather find healing for body and spirit?
As the lives of four wounded souls begin to weave together like an Amish patchwork quilt, they each discover missing pieces of their life puzzles--and glimpse the merciful and loving hand of God.

From Publishers Weekly
Popular novelist and Amish specialist Lewis (The Brethren) launches a new series with this volume. Two young women, Amish Grace Byler and graduate student Heather Nelson, stand as counterpoints in parallel plots involving two secrets. Grace's mother is troubled; Heather, whose mother has died of cancer, tells no one in her circle of her own diagnosis of terminal illness, which drives her to Pennsylvania Amish country in search of healing. Grace's mother makes a decision that painfully complicates the action and drives it forward. Grace, her family and friends and the Amish milieu are drawn with characteristically ample detail, right down to jars of preserves set out on the tables at many bountiful Amish meals. Lots of powerful emotions go characteristically unspoken in this reticent culture, though the reader won't miss them. By comparison, the emotional high-stakes Heather plot is less detailed and consequently less engrossing. Lewis lays out—and knots—many plot threads to pursue and resolve in subsequent installments in the series, ensuring readers' return. (Mar.)

Incomplete
By micmac
This is the first book by Beverly Lewis that I have read. While I enjoyed parts of the story, it is not fair to call it a book. A book should be able to stand alone. This one clearly cannot. She didn't even attempt a conclusion. It is just the end of a chapter, leaving the story/book incomplete. There wasn't any resolution, just lots of loose threads. One of my English professors said a loose thread or two can be overlooked in a great piece of literature, but never in anything less.(And very rarely will you find any in great literature!) I cannot imagine purchasing two more books on the hope that she may tie off those threads and finish what should have been one book.

OK ... though it felt like a middle grade book ... with adult topics

I read this because I like Amish books for a light, quick read, so long as I get them free or cheap. This one was free.
Frankly, it's a boring read, but it doesn't have to be. This book has potential, but it is too slow-moving, and by the time I realised there would be no resolution (ending) to the story in this book, I wwas almost done. I refuse to purchase the remaining two books to finish the story, as really this should have been one good novel, rather than a boring series.
The subject matter is good, though perhaps misplaced in an Amish community ... I don't know enough to say. It did not ring true to me and even though you know by the end of the book where it is going, the modern Heather is more an annoyance in this first book of the series than an addition to it.
Just not very convincing or enticing.

A trilogy that should have been just one book.

Okay, I fell for it................a free book! It was interesting, it was free. Often, it dragged on and I thought, "Okay, could we get on with the story here?" Since it was free, I purchased part 2, "The Missing". I didn't realize that it was a 3 part series. Things moved along a little better but even in part 2 there are those incredibly slow and obvious parts that make you wonder why the author just doesn't tell the story. Then you get to the end of the book and once again not to the end of the story. Yes, I am purchasing part 3. I won't be purchasing any more 3 part series from this author. If the 3 books had been combined into 1 it would be a fantastic story. Oh, I feel, what was it, "schnerfoodled". My free Kindle book is pretty expensive. I could have bought one true book from a different author for half the price of buying three to get a whole story out of Beverly Lewis. Too bad, she seems pretty talented. Maybe her publisher's will take note and allow her to complete a story in on book. If you want to pay premium dollar for a single story that drags through 3 books, go for it..........otherwise, go with a different author until Ms. Lewis works through this phase.
