Earhart was a self-possessed and downright adventurous young woman. By the time she was 25, Earhart had become one of those early mythical heroes of the sky whom people came to see at air meets and dreamed of emulating.' She vagabonded' across the country solo in a plane and, with the help of her husband, publishing giant George Putnam, had the book documenting her tale out on the stands less than two weeks after completion of the feat. The list of her flight achievements is lengthy and impressive. But it is the cool yet inspired marriage between Putnam and Earhart, two inveterate adventurers, that lies at the core of Butler's biography. Putnam was a brilliant media spin-doctor who relentlessly promoted his wife's image. Butler's study raises some provocative questions (Was Earhart a feminist or just a singular human being? Were her feats victories for women everywhere or victories for pure heroism?) without convincingly answering them. But if the study isn't always persuasive in its answers, it is filled with wonderful details about Earhart's glamorous lifestyle and the wild, dangerous world of early aviators…Butler's flat writing style somewhat undermines her portrait of Earhart's singular emotional and physical courage. Interesting era, fascinating character

Biographies of famous people always lack a certain suspense, because you pretty well know how they are going to end. With Earhart, however, the end has always been the great mystery. It remains so here. This is not a what happened to Amelia tale, this is a how did Amelia happen tale. It combines the birth of aviation and the maturation of feminism in an exceptionally readable narrative of a mid-American woman's improbable ascension to fame and celebrity in the early twentieth century. In the process, her life intersects with nearly all of the major figures of the time. Amelia Earhart is an interesting woman that you would have liked to have known.
This is one of the best written biographies of any figure that I've read. My only criticisms are at the beginning and the end. The first chapter is the obligatory ancestral stuff that is slow going and probably unnecessary. If you can get through that, it's really a great read.
The end gives, in my opinion, short shrift of the aftermath of Earhart's disappearance, not so much in that the author refuses to engage in massive speculation as to Earhart's fate, but I would have liked more detail about the lives of those who survived her. That said, I would not hesitate to recommend this book, as I already have to most on my friends.

This will be included in our Book Club's selections for next year. We preview the books to be sure they're all right for our members and this certainly passed with flying colors! There will always be mystery about her disappearance and thus interest in the subject.

What most pilots could not do

For my English class I had to read a biography, so I choose to read about an American icon. I think that this book was really good because I got to learn about Amelia Earhart's life.
This book was about Amelia wanting to become a pilot and do what most pilots couldn't do. One of the things that Amelia did was fly across the Pacific from Hawaii to California. Only ten pilots attempted it before and all died, but when Amelia attempted it she made it safely across. Amelia's last flight was an attempt to fly around the world. On July 2, something happened to her airplane, and after that no one knows where she is now. One interesting words that the author used was "innumerable. " The author's use was "we four have just ideal times together and we have gone on innumerable canoe trips, walking jaunts etc. together." I think that author was trying to expand the readers' vocabulary because innumerable means incapable of being counted and she could have use the word countless, myriad, etc. One of the reviews I read said that the book didn't feel realistic, which was kind of true.
Overall this book was good because I got to learn something new, and I would recommend this book to someone who wanted to learn about Amelia Earhart.
