Robert Anton Wilson uses the two greatest scientific and artistic minds of the 20th Century to solve a mystery whose roots may reach back for millenia. Are they up to the task? Well yes and no. The important thing is Wilson is able to show us, in a very exciting and terrifying manner, quite believable and comprehensible insights into the minds of Albert Einstein and James Joyce as they ettempt to tackle that mystery of mysteries... "who are the Illuminati and what do they want?" In this book are mind boggling-ideas, brilliant nonsense and frighteneing notions that are that much scarier for seeming to make sense. This book scared the heck out of me.

Metaphysical Mystery: Conundrum of pseudo-historical Thrills

Masks of The Illuminati is a fast-paced Adventure and Detective Story, with Albert Einstein & James Joyce playing Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, in the historical setting of The Real World. However, the characters also spend a great deal of time in the Metaphysical world, as well. The average reader will not comprehend half of this book--but, that is the excitement of the adventure! Only the Illuminated truly "get it." ;)
Seriously, Students of "The Mysteries" will have a field day (or an Astral Field Trip) with this thrilling "fictional" novel.
Robert Anton Wilson must be a genius to have incorporated so much historical and metaphysical Truth, into this "story" of a young, wealthy, well-educated Englishman being Initiated into a branch of The Golden Dawn, while trying to investigate a series of strange "occult" attacks in Scotland, against a Presbyterian minister....fighting both the forces of Darkness and his own repressed sexual tendencies, simultaneously !
This is a fascinating journey into the world of occult organizations and Initiation, climaxing in a most unusual and exciting manner....leading the reader to strongly desire clapping Aleister Crowley on the back while saying, "Well-done, 'ol chap!"
I strongly doubt that non-occultists will understand this great novel--but, the Story holds it's own and being a student of The Mysteries is not a Prerequisite. For those in the dark, a quick online search can fill in the gaps, as you read.
This book is more fast-paced than Focault's Pendulumn and the scenes with Einstein & Joyce as Sleuths are very well-constructed. You will feel that you are in the room with them...listening attentively and anxiously awaiting the Conclusion !

One of the more enjoyable Wilson books

This book has something lacking in most Wilson books, namely a linear plotline and fairly believable characters who aren't merely stand-ins for the author's philosophy. Granted three of the characters are real people but that's besides the point.
An amateur Kabalist who is related to the Hagbard Celine of the original Illuminatus trilogy (and the other Celine of the Historical Illuminatus trilogy) finds himself driven mad by the machinations of Aleister Crowley. On a train he runs into Albert Einstein - the scientist who approached science as if it were art - and James Joyce - the artist who approached art as if it were a science. As he retells his story, Einstein and Joyce slowly unravel the trail of deceit and mindgames sponsored by Crowley.
It's fairly obvious by the second chapter that not only is this not much of a thriller, but Robert Anton Wilson is a major Aleister Crowley fan. Much of this book is a homage to Wilson's favorite historical figures with "Uncle Al" as the star of the show. That may take away from the whole mystery aspect of the book, but you find yourself cheering on Crowley soon as well.
This is not only a great book but a nice controlled storyline. The only complaint is that it doesn't have much to do with the world of the Illuminatus! Trilogy, and the word Illuminatus seems to be tacked on in order to sell this book to fans of that series. However, in many ways this later work surpasses the original trilogy.

About the Author

Desmond Bagley wrote 16 novels, becoming one of the world's top-selling authors, with his books translated into more than 30 languages. He was born in 1923 in Kendal and brought up in Blackpool, beginning his working life, aged 14, in the printing industry. After working in an aircraft factory during the Second World War, he decided to travel, working his way through Europe and southern Africa, and in 1951 joined the gold mining industry before becoming a freelance journalist in Johannesburg, where he wrote his first novel, The Golden Keel, in 1962. In 1964 he returned to England, finally settling in Guernsey with his wife, where he died in 1983.

Not Bagley's best

Desmond Bagley novels are often divided into two (approximate) halves. In the first half, Bagley sets up a mystery. Often we don't know who many of the characters "really" are or what they are up to. Frequently, Bagley does not even reveal the true nature and motivation of the main character. By the second half, most of the mystery has been revealed the novel turns into a fairly straightforward `adventure' with the hero being pursued by the villains. At their best (The Vivero Letter, Running Blind, The Freedom Trap) this formula works brilliantly well.

These two novels are not on that level, however. The Tightrope Men begins well - a man wakes up in Oslo, unaware of how he got there and, when he looks in the mirror, he doesn't even recognise his own face. But the story has a problem. A central feature has such a high level of improbability that I found it impossible to suspend disbelief. In spite of that, it's a pretty decent yarn.

The Enemy is probably the most disappointing of Bagley's novels that I've read. This time it begins with an inexplicable acid attack and it soon leads into an international conspiracy. There are some clever ideas along the way but the story has far too many twists and turns, random events and irrelevant red herrings. In the end, what sounded initially like a fascinating idea turns into a pretty average goodies versus baddies story with a rushed and unsatisfying ending.

I love Bagley. He's one of the great thriller writers. But these are not his greatest novels.

Two Great Adventure-Thrillers for the price of one!

Desmond Bagley is a Grand-Master of the Adventure-Thriller Genre. As such, he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the likes of Alistair MacLean, Duncan Kyle, Helen MacInnis, and Hammond Innis. In a review of one of Bagley’s books, MacLean wrote, “He writes better than I do.” In these “two-fers” you get two great thrillers for the piece of one. A GREAT deal and a GREAT read!

The Cold War was Hot!

These are two cold war thrillers by Bagley. In The Tightrope Men, an Brit goes to sleep in England and awakens more than a week later in Oslo with a new face, no memory, and a different name. As he tries to resolve his lost week and life, he becomes aware that he is in the center of an intelligence ploy which takes him on an adventure across most of Scandinavia. The Enemy is also a cold war thriller. The hero falls in love with a daughter of a wealthy, respectable industrialist who disappears after his other daughter is the victim of an acid thrower. The hero tries to save his potential father-in-law and his sweetheart only to find his access to the computer data blocked. Great reads, both of them.

TRUE TO LIFE..TEAR JERKER

Kimberla, I read "Behind Closed Doors" and love it so I knew I would love "Here and Now". I found myself crying and cheering for the characters in this book. I read the book so fast I had to re-read it and enjoyed it more the second time around.
I felt as if Kimberla was writing about my life through some of these pages. I found myself talking to Racquel and telling her to think about what she was putting her husband through and stop before she loose him.
Marcella was very strong and I gave her credit for trying to give her children a better life. I found it very encouraging that she went back to school. That was a big plus.
Once again I loved this book from cover to cover. Kimberla, I've already put my order in for "Casting the First Stone". I can't wait to start reading your 3rd novel. I wish you much success. Keep them coming girl. Be Blessed!

dream, desire's and out of pure desperation

Kimberly I feel like I've been knowing you for years. I read all your books in a matter of hours rather than days and weeks. I can hardly put them down. Where do I begin. Marcella, Marcella, Marcella. She learned a lot of things the hard way, but that's not the point. The point is she learned them. I applaud this particular character. She went though sooooooooo very much. I can relate to her. At one point I felt overwhelmed with her going through so much. I had to put the book down and pray. I felt a great amount of fear rose up in me. My heart went out to her. I had to remind myself that it was just a book. I've gone through a lot of things in my life and just like Marcella it was by the Grace of God I Made it. I'm so very glad she had a friend. Somebody who listen to her without judging her. Rachel I begin to pray for her myself, because she was truly obsessed with having a baby. I want a baby too, but I'm like her husband, lovemaking became more like a routine chore, rather than a beautiful, intimate time that a couple shared. I wish that when I get married, my husband have some of the character her husband had (committed to the marrieage, to her, to the family, understand, communicative, romantic, sexy, independent, dependant, loyal and fun to be around.) And Tyrone, that lowdown dogsnake at least he was good for something. I was at least glad he had since enough to have insurance. I don't know how I would have handled my teenage daughter doing what she did. I don't know what's worse; reading the diary or having to confront her about it. I simply could not believe it. After reading that passage I began to survey my own friends who have teenage children to see what they would have done. No one knew. But it makes you think. Overall the books was absolutely intrigueing, just like all of your work. Like I said I hope to one day be able to meet you to be able to spend time with you and pick your brain. It just amazes me as to the characters in your next book will be doing. I love the book and all it's concepts. As usually I learned a lot and would highly recommend it to anyone whom ask. Keep up the work girlfriend. Oh yea the aunt and uncle was tooooo funny.

A story of triumph

Although this book was very sad and depressing at times I choose to focus on how the characters ovrcame thier depressing situations. Often times we focus on the negative and continue to dwell in it so long that we don't see the good staring us right in the face.
My heart goes out to all the Raquel's in the world. God blessed me with two chldren but I must admit if I didn't have them I may have been more crazy than Racquel. Her husband was one of the most wonderful guys in this world. If only we can all be as patient with our loved ones as this character was. He was truly remarkable. I also appreciated this character because all too often Balck men are not potratyed as positive, sensitive, or caring. It was refreshing to see someone describe a Black man the way that I know them to be.
Marcella also tells a story that sadly a lot of young Black women have to tell. I thought her situation with Tyrone was typical and most insightful. I also found it encouraging that this character went back to school. That is a message that a lot single mtohers need to hear. That can turn thier lives around for themselves and thier children.
It was also nice to read about a friendship as strong as the one between Marcella and Sharon.
I read some of the comments before I wrote mine and noticed that a lot of people felt the book was too depressing. There are no rules that state that all books are to be uplifting and funny. This book was depressing and it made me cry a number of times, but then so does real life. I judge how good an author is by how connected they can make me feel with the characters. And Ms. Lawson Roby definetly had me connected to the characters in her book. I look forward to the next one

I'll start with a confession: I've never read Robert B. Parker before. And I didn't know anything about Spenser before I met him in Crimson Joy. I don't know - I thought maybe Sam Spade; dark, rainy nights, bare light bulbs in a dingy office.
Boy, was I wrong.
In this book, Spenser and friends are up against the Red Rose killer. The bad guy is quite obviously a psychological case, so Spenser's psychologist girlfriend gets to be a partner in crime as well as in bed, with delightful humor and good will. They're both such really great people, it's fun to be around them.
Spenser is in great physical shape; he's brave and witty; he's a gourmet cook. He's never ruffled. Faced with a slime talk show host or a five-thug citizen pressure group, his wit, strength, and courage save the day.
Okay, it might all be too good to be true, but this is a story. It's comfortable, funny, fast-paced, breezy and uncomplicated. The plot is clever enough to interest, even if the outcome is surly a foregone conclusion.
In Spenser's words, "To be who I was and do what I did had to assume I'd win." That's how I felt from the start and I was glad he was who he was and did what he did and I loved every minute of it.

Parker at his best

I have been reading Spenser since I was a teenager and this is one of the best I have read.
The case in the story, a serail killer who leaves a red rose at the scene of the crime, is a heart wrenching one. As the case developes the novel gets more intense and more belivable.
Then when the reader thinks the case is resolved Parker throws one last heart wrenching detail at his readers. This is parker at the top of his craft. A must read for any Spenser fan.

Typical Spenser fare, for Better or for Worse

This book is a typical Spenser for Hire book, for better or for worse. You know the routine by now: capable of a read in a single sitting; the witty repartee; the sassy and cocksure internal narrative by Spenser; the sparring with Hawk to mask the mutual feelings of respect; the surprisingly clever descriptions of characters; the Boston settings depicted with pride. Parker is to be commended on his choice of words, because although his stories are so brief, they say a lot and don't waste much time. In fact, I describe the Spenser stories as compact more than short. They are powerful in that Parker never lets you forget he is a wordsmith, and capable of great bursts of creativity and humor.
Crimson Joy is not as action packed as other Spenser books, and is more cerebral. Susan plays more of a role in this one, too, and thus it has a lot of psychological overtones. This makes the book interesting from a clinical sense, but some readers might miss the fighting and machismo. This book is kind of sexy, too, in terms of its exploration of Spenser and Susan's relationship, though it never stoops to being crude or raunchy. [I keep forgetting these are just racy enough to prevent their becoming family books, since I find myself wanting to recommend them to folks of all ages.]

I was really disappointed by this book. I read and review a lot of books. This books was by far one of the worst plots that I have ever read. The grammar was good. I didn't find any misspelled words. In my opinion I would rather read a book with poor grammar, and tons of words misspelled if the book has a good solid plot and story line.

Emma was in love with her husband. The two wanted a child but so far Emma was not able to get pregnant. Emma was at her doctors. At the end of the exam the doctor was called out of the exam room. When he left, he dropped a piece of paper. Emma picked it up, and read the words infertile, and endometriosis. I don't think she even looked for her name on the paper the doctor had dropped. She just went home packed, and left her husband. She left leaving a note saying she couldn't be the wife he needed.

Dimitri had a security detail follow Emma. That detail reported that his wife had moved in with another man. Dimitri never followed her, and he did not try to find out who the man was. He just assumed the worst about his wife for four years. If he would have asked questions, or tried, he would have found out she moved in with her brother.

4 years later Emma needed money so her brother could have surgery. She had no choice. She had to ask her husband for his help. It took the whole book for the two to undercover the truth. I felt this book was a waist of my time. I felt the hero and heroine wasted four years, when a second opinion was all that was needed. I also felt if he really loved his wife, he would have gone to her, to find out was going on.

Why did you abandon me?

This story reminded me about a song of the Spanish Singer Paloma San Basilio titled Por qué me abandonaste? (Why did you abandon me?) When Emma needs money to help her brother (unknown to her husband) with a surgery she asks her still husband for help as a codebtor. He refuses but made her a proposal to give birth a baby. She left him because she misunderstood that she can't have babys by reading some results at the Obgyn. They haven't stop loving each other after four years and they love each other as time didn't pass by. He's smart enough to reivestigate who was the man she was living with after she left him, without her telling him. He should have done so, since the begining but thats the story all about. When she decides to tell him about her infertility he took her to a Doctor to request a second opinion (what should she have done initially). It was a very touching story. A must keep.

This is a good book, not one of Ms Lennox's best, but still good. I would have liked it better if Demitri had not had multiple mistresses in Emma's absence. And he had not admitted them to her when she said that she had not been unfaithful.

I must admit, when I first began reading Push, I was a little uncomfortable with the narrative perspective because it was so blunt in its descriptions. However, as hard of a time as I had with reading this text, I had an even harder time putting it down. Sapphire's novel forced me to face the reality of the verbally and sexually abusive life that Precious Jones was forced to live in. Unfortunately, Precious is not alone and Sapphire took the first step in acknowleding this problem by putting it into words, even though the words make some uncomfortable. Once I started reading and listening to Precious, I could not let go. Precious Jones is a sixteen year old girl, verbally and physically abused by her mother and sexually abused by her father. She gives birth to two children, her own father also being father of her children. However, this book is not only an attack on the abuse that occurs within a family. Sapphire also places blame on the educational system that sits back while their students are deprived of educational advancement because of their situations at home. There are so many children, like Precious, who want to learn but come to believe that they are dumb because no one took the time to examine the problem closer. I hurt for Precious because she had no self esteem, how could she when her father stripped everything from her, including her virginity, before she was even out of elementary school. I could not put the book down without knowing how she was going to rise above her circumstances. I got so wrapped up in this book, believing in Precious and everything she went through. Sapphire's book involved so many emotions and was so inspiring that I believe no student or teacher should go without reading this book.

You will never forget Precious Jones

Claireece "Precious" Jones leads a tough life. She is abused by her mother, raped by her father, she is poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and mostly unnoticed. She is pregnant by her father with her second child. She is 16 years old and still in Junior High School.

When a school administrator finds out that she is pregnant again - they quickly try to find another source of education for her. She is sent to alternative school. It is in this new school where Precious meets her new teacher, Ms. Rain. Ms. Rain is the first teacher who has ever taken the time to understand and really help Precious - along with some of her classmates. For the first time in her life, Precious feels like she belongs somewhere. She connects with her classmates, but especially with her teacher. Here she experiences the kindness of others, something completely foreign to her. She also comes to realize that she is not alone.

To be honest, I had never heard of this novel before I began to hear of the movie "Precious". I like to read the novel before I watch the movie, so when I began to read all the reviews on Precious I quickly ran out and purchased a copy of Push.

I really didn't know what to expect - but to be quite frank, I was really taken in by this novel. I did find it a little disturbing to read - here's a sample of how most of the book read:

" I was left back when I was twelve because I had a baby for my fahver. That was in 1983. I was out of school for a year. This is gonna be my second baby. My daughter got down sinder. She's retarded. I had got left back in the second grade too, when I was seven, cause I couldn't read (and I still peed on myself). I should be in the twelf' grade so I can gone 'n graduate. But I'm not. I'm in the ninfe grade".

Once I got past the grammar and spelling issues - I was basically moved to tears. Precious' struggle is so raw, disturbing, sad... and yet there was hope within it too. I could not put it down and read the whole thing in one sitting. The whole time you're reading this you can't help but think that there are people out there who have lived this sort of life - and it makes it even more heart-breaking to read.

This is a story that will stick with you long after you have put it down. It will open your eyes to the reality that these issues do occur and will make you rethink your own problems (which seem so insignificant when compared to a life like this). But as you close the cover you will come to realize that you will never forget Precious Jones.

Through the Eyes and Voice of a Tortured Girl

This is a story about a girl who could be hopeless, and does feel that way sometimes, but continues to push forward despite horrid experiences of incest, violence and illiteracy. It is the repulsiveness of all of this, that brings out such compassion, anger, sadness and a range of other emotions in the reader.

It is easy to assume that parents are supposed to cherish and protect their children. Maybe not perfectly, but certainly it blows the mind how FAR from love her parents reside. There were times, when I literally, had to look away from the pages and take a breath.

Based on other reviews and the author's decision to tell the story in first person, I knew that Precious' dialect was going to be difficult so I approached reading this book like an actor reading a script. It did make it easier to understand by doing this, but also more painful. This book is novella size. It is not a lengthy story and purposefully it seems, most characters are not as developed as it looks like they might be in the upcoming movie. If one takes the book as it's own piece of work though, you are really drawn to focus on Precious and since she is her own narrator, it would be out of character for her to describe everyone else in great detail.

WIthout passing judgement against it at all, even though I knew this story was going to be disturbing, I still wasn't prepared for the graphic detail. So readers, be ready.
